2009

Google begins a self-driving car project

The goal of the project was to develop autonomous vehicles capable of safely navigating roads without human intervention. Google began testing its self-driving cars on public roads in 2010, and by 2012, the project had logged over 300,000 miles of autonomous driving.

2015

First fully autonomous ride on public roads

Using Firefly, Steven Mahan took the world’s first fully self-driving ride on public roads in Austin, TX. Steve is legally blind.

2016

Waymo becomes an independent company

Established under Alphabet, Waymo becomes a self-driving technology company. With its new status, the company expanded its operations and resources to further accelerate the development of self-driving technology.

2017

Waymo's first public self-driving ride

Waymo achieved a significant milestone by launching its first public self-driving ride service in Phoenix, Arizona. Waymo's ride service, called Waymo One, initially operated with a limited number of participants and gradually expanded its coverage area over time.

2018

Waymo One launches commercially

With the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, Waymo mass-produced vehicles designed for and integrated with the Waymo Driver.

2020

Waymo opens its autonomous driving service to the public

Anyone in the U.S. can download the Waymo One app directly and instantly hail a fully autonomous ride in our service territory. However, at the time the location was limited in Metro Phoenix.

2021

Waymo project in San Francisco begins

Waymo began allowing candidates to use their autonomous service for their everyday needs while providing valuable feedback that helps shape the future of mobility.

2022

Waymo launches publicly in San Francisco

In early 2022, Waymo began serving fully autonomous riders — with no human behind the wheel — to employees and the public alike through the waitlist and to Trusted Testers.

2023

Waymo today and beyond

Waymo serves its first fully autonomous rides in LA (employees only for now).
Waymo becomes fully electric, bidding farewell to the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, and committing to the Jaguar I-PACE.
Waymo expands its service area in Phoenix.
